Our homeowners had become frustrated with the impractical and awkward design of their kitchen and dining area. The load bearing wall separating the rooms created serious traffic flow issues and limited work and living space.  They were looking to somehow convert the existing area into an open, convenient kitchen space with ample room for both family and guests. Ultimately, they wanted to combine a bright, spacious look and feel with the appearance and efficiency of a gourmet kitchen. Our design needed to accommodate their needs and wishes without changing the home's footprint.

Removing all the interior walls and entirely gutting the space - achieved the open feel our clients desired. Custom cherry cabinetry, Dakota Mahogany granite countertops, and the butler's pantry satisfied the need for work space, storage areas and plenty of room for entertaining.  A computer and work area was designed around an existing window - offering a much better usage of space while fulfilling another of our clients' requests. The room's focal point, a center island snack bar with built-in cook top stove and steel range hood provides a beautiful place to do homework, enjoy casual meals, or converse with guests.  Cherry hardwood flooring continues through the back hall and upgraded powder room, giving the entire kitchen area a larger, more contemporary feel.

Our greatest challenge occurred with the common wall between the dining room and kitchen - the primary load bearing wall for the home. Due to unique construction methods employed by the original home builder, this wall did not align with the structural beam in basement below. The basement had been recently finished, so all structural solutions needed to be addressed from above. We successfully integrated all required structural items without compromising the design or look of the new kitchen space.

The final result of this dramatic renovation converted a small dining room, hall, and kitchen into an open and inviting space. The new front foyer and back hall balance the remodeled area within the home. Entirely transformed, our clients now enjoy a kitchen and family living area custom made for today's modern family.
