HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - BUILDERS BLITZ June 5-9, 2006:

[Day 1] [Day 2] [Day 3 ] [Day 4] [Day 5 ]

milwaukee habitat for humanity builders blitzDay Four – Thursday, June 8, 2006

What a difference a day makes! Arriving at 2555 N. 33rd Street I find a distinctively different atmosphere than what greeted me yesterday. The bright sun clearly reflects temperaments - everyone is beaming! I am astonished standing before a home that appears finished from the outside. I find it hard to imagine that only a foundation was here Monday morning. Four short days ago!

All interior painting is complete, and a final coat of soft tan paint, to match the siding, was applied to the front porch. With soft tan siding, white trim, soffits and facia, this is one classy little house! Glen Pluff Trucking is busy spreading topsoil assisted by his wife Peggy and our able-bodied crew. No other exterior work is being done. Most of the action is inside now.

Before heading in to check out progress, I see Steve Tennies, of Milwaukee Habitat, with an entourage heading my way. With him, is Sara Kierzek, Executive Director of Milwaukee Habitat, Matt Moroney, Executive Director of the MBA and Abby Gowand, of Habitat for Humanity International. Abby has spent the week touring cities, new habitat homes in progress and meeting builders. A young woman, she is full of enthusiasm for the 2006 Builders Blitz, and tells me she loves the style of homes being built in Milwaukee! Most of the group joins me to tour the inside of our home. Pausing along the way, I make introductions and am glad president, Tom Weiher, has the opportunity to meet Abby.

We are all duly impressed by what we see. Especially me! Yesterday at this time, workers were hustling to finish the drywall. Now, walls are finished and painted, kitchen cabinets and countertops are installed, pantry shelving, doors and millwork are hung and the crew from Malkin’s Carpets is working hard laying the wood laminate flooring. It’s beautiful! I am thinking how thrilled Shenita will be when she sees her home tomorrow. This is one day she cannot be here; her oldest son is graduating from middle school!

Horsch & Miller, handling plumbing and HVAC, and Triple T Electric, intended to return tomorrow. They don’t need to. They are completely finished. KING, Schedule, nods approval at his worthy subjects…..and like I said, it’s smiles all around.

Rain is in the forecast tomorrow. No matter. Rain won’t dampen spirits. Cloudy or bright, tomorrow will be a celebration!
